  • Yes. We actively encourage experienced law enforcement officers to apply. Lateral officers bring valuable skills and perspectives, and we offer a streamlined hiring and training process to get you on the street quickly.

  • Qualified laterals may be eligible for higher starting pay based on experience, accelerated vacation accrual, and reduced field training time. The City of Coronado also provides competitive benefits, CalPERS retirement, and ongoing professional development opportunities. We also currently offer a $20,000 signing bonus for eligible lateral applicants.

  • While the hiring process includes the same essential steps (oral interview, background investigation, polygraph, medical, and psychological exams), laterals may attend a modified field training program tailored to their experience.

  • Lateral officers typically complete an abbreviated Field Training Officer (FTO) program. The exact length depends on your demonstrated experience and performance, but the goal is to transition you smoothly into solo patrol while familiarizing you with Coronado’s policies, geography, and community expectations.

  • Lateral officers can pursue a variety of specialized opportunities, including Detectives, Traffic Unit, School Resource Officer, Task Force Officers, Bicycle Patrol Teams and future promotional tracks. With our smaller agency size, laterals often have quicker access to specialized assignments compared to larger departments.
